Mel Clark 1921-2014

Mel Clark, a long time trade negotiator for Canada, passed away on March 14. His Notice of Death in the April 24 Globe and Mail describes him as “an independent and progressive thinker with a strong sense of social responsibility.“ “Mel`s decades of experience in the world of international trade had convinced him that free trade is necessary for the economic health of a nation; free trade governed by multilateral laws developed by the World Trade Organization as opposed to the restrictive inequitable FTA and NAFTA agreements.“ He wrote the Liberal party paper oppsing the FTA. He was one of three Mels opposed to the FTA, along with Mel Hurtig and myself. I liked to think of this as Mels Against Free Trade Agreements or MAFTA.
