Robin Boadway on Internal Trade

“Balkanization of our national economic space . . . thicket of provincial barriers.”

– Conference Board of Canada, Mission Possible, 2007

“Our federation has been a ‘mini global economy’ for decades. There are virtually no internal barriers to labour and capital mobility, and no tariff-like distortions on interprovincial trade.”

Robin Boadway, “National Tax Policy for an International Economy: Comments,” in Room to Manoeuvre?, edited by Thomas Courchene (Montreal and Kingston: McGill-Queen’s University Press, 1999)

Marc and I quoted John Helliwell and Brian Copeland making the same point. Add Robin Boadway to the list of distinguished economists who do not subscribe to the hysteria about supposed inter-provincial trade barriers.
